The majority of SFMA members are both designers and makers. Their artistic eye is balanced by understanding the properties of the materials they use. Our makers choose wood, usually hardwood and preferably locally sourced. Sometimes there is a specific request, for example a fallen tree to be transformed into a piece for the family. Sometimes a surprise is needed with unexpected materials and colours enhancing the natural beauty of the wood.
The Forestry Commission Scotland and The Association of Scottish Hardwood Sawmillers (ASHS) and Scottish Working Woods encourage wider use of homegrown hardwood.
Not available in large volumes, Scottish hardwoods are a decorative and sustainable choice due to reduced distances required to transport timber from forest to customer and often from local suppliers. The most readily available hardwoods in the UK include:
Whilst hardwood is popular, many of our members work with softwood and other materials to suit their customers’ design preferences. Many customers have a clear idea of which material they would like to be used for their furniture, whilst others will leave it up to the furniture maker. SFMA members’ experience and highly skilled approach ensure that the right type of timber is selected for the specific design and the product’s intended use.
